Conceptual Design of the Green Belt for the Cross-Border ECOC District

The area under consideration is an integral part of the European Capital of Culture (EPK) district, which will be the focal point of the European Capital of Culture 2025. The new cross-border green promenade will be situated along and near the border, extending through the railway facilities along the tracks that are part of the renovation and investments for EPK 2025. It incorporates existing green areas, a cycling path, and the Kolodvorska road. The intervention primarily envisions a green and sustainable landscape regeneration that will functionally, aesthetically, and socially transform the former border zone—once an impersonal administrative area—into a recognizable cross-border urban space of the twin city.

The cross-border green belt is a logical outcome of a strategic shift in the planned interventions, moving from the initial imperative of constructing a new “border facility” to focusing on the renovation and reuse of existing railway structures and the urban landscape regeneration of the entire border zone, which stretches from “customs house to customs house”: from the former border crossing at Erjavčeva Street/Škabrijelova Street or Via San Gabriele, along the border, to the northern end of Kolodvorska Road at the former Solkan border crossing.

The cross-border green belt is a key element of connectivity within the EPK district, representing a flexible and inclusive space for new coexistence, providing the twin city with a complementary and dynamic social venue. The design principle of the green belt, as a linear urban-landscape feature of the twin city, is based on integrating the projects from the application book with nature-based design solutions (NBS – nature-based solutions).
